This item’s creation began millions of years ago when fine sediment collected and formed deposits of the clay now being mined and reformulated for use in pottery. With a little careful crafting, this sloppy substance takes form in my hands and on the potter’s wheel. The best of those forms are brought to 1046 degrees Celsius in a kiln, where they vitrify and become ready to accept glaze. This glaze essentially becomes a glass coating on the piece when it is again fired to 1177 degrees Celsius, further toughening the body and leaving it smooth, colorful, and easy to clean.
